Electrode is a solid electric conductor that transmit electric current into non-metallic component in electric circuit, usually they are good electric conductors and are of two type cathode and anode. Tungsten is a metal found in 1781, having highest melting point and lowest vapor pressure than all other metals. Tungsten has outstanding corrosion resistance and hardness.
Tungsten is used as an electrode because of its high melting point (3,4100C), conductivity and relative chemical inertness. There are various types of tungsten electrodes used generally such as cerium tungsten, pure tungsten and thoriated tungsten. Tungsten electrodes are manufactured by powder metallurgy and formed to size after sintering.
The various tungsten oxides are used as electrodes for instance, thoriated electrode contain thorium oxide. Tungsten electrodes find application in tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, plasma welding, cutting, thermal spray and in batteries also.
In 1940, tungsten electrodes were firstly used in gas arc welding where they were used for the accurate joining of critical components which need exact heat input. Tungsten electrodes channel the current essential to create an arc in the welding process and also it tolerates very high temperatures with minimal melting.
Tungsten electrodes are commonly available from 0.5 to 6.4 mm diameter and 150 - 200 mm length in market. The current carrying capacity of tungsten electrodes basically depends upon whether it is connected to positive or negative terminal of DC power source. Tungsten electrode are also used in batteries with lead oxide.
