Rolling piston compressors are used for small capacity applications of up to 2 kW, such as domestic air conditioners and refrigerators. These compressors are included in the class of positive displacement compressors. Rolling piston compressors perform compression by reducing the volume of refrigerant. In this compressors rotating shaft of the compressor is eccentric with the rotor and its axis of rotation matches with centerline of the cylinder.
The rotating motion of the roller creates reciprocation of the single vane which is positioned in non-rotating cylindrical block. The eccentricity of the shaft with reference to the roller enables suction and compression of the refrigerant. Rolling piston compressors are also called as fixed vane compressors.
