Melamine fibers are heat- and flame-resistant synthetic fiber made from melamine-formaldehyde resin and synthetic fibers in which the fiber-forming substance is a synthetic polymer composed of at least 50% by weight of a cross-linked melamine polymer.
Melamine fiber is a cost effective heat resistant fiber based on melamine chemistry, with a 400°F (200°C) continuous operating temperature. Melamine fibers are most preferably blended with another synthetic filament in order to achieve the desired yarns properties
Melamine fibers has important traits such as flame resistant, outstanding heat/dimensional stability, and self-extinguishing. This traits make melamine fibers a good choice for flame resistant apparel. Typical fiber lengths are in the 1-12mm range, and they show excellent dispersion and formation in wet-laid processes. Melamine fibers are processed with standard textile equipment and are sometimes blended with commodity fibers and other heat resistant synthetic fibers such as aramid fibers.
The production process of melamine fiber is proprietary. It is based on a unique melamine chemistry that results in a cross-linked, non-thermoplastic polymer of melamine units joined by methylene and dimethylene ether linkages. In the polymerization reaction, methylol derivatives of melamine react with each other to form a three-dimensional structure. This structure is the basis for the fiber's heat stability, solvent resistance, and flame resistance.
The important characteristics of melamine fibers are chars without shrinking, naturally flame retardant, low thermal conductivity, non-toxic, white and dye able, flame resistance and low thermal conductivity, high heat dimensional stability and processable on standard textile equipment.
Melamine Fiber is prominently used applications such as fire blocking fabrics, protective clothing and high temperature filtration products due to the superior heat and flame resistance property. Besides application in chemical industry a major field of application for melamine fiber is within the aerospace industry for manufacturing fire blocking fabrics in aircraft seating’s which is likely to act as an opportunity.
