Copper clad wire, or CCW, is a type of wire made up of solid metal core covered by a layer of copper so as to enhance the wire’s overall performance. This is not to be confused with an alloy because the process involved in manufacturing copper clad wires is known as cladding. The bimetallic wire provides optimum characteristics of both the metals, namely copper and the base metal. For instance, aluminum copper clad wire is a low weight product compared to the pure aluminum wire of similar dimensions. This is primarily due to the aluminum core. Additionally, copper cladding enhances the conductivity and provides solderability to the product. Of the overall cross sectional area of copper clad wire, approximately 10% is copper clad. By volume, the copper cladding varies between 10% and 15%, depending upon the desired diameter of the final product.
The adoption rate of newer technologies in the electrical industry, particularly among the wiring and cable manufacturers, is relatively low. Hence, copper clad wire has faced uncertainty for a brief period of time before being widely accepted across industries. With its proven benefits as compared to pure copper wires, copper clad wires are expected to witness a significant demand in the coming years. Another factor contributing significantly to the growth of copper clad wire market is the high price of copper. Due to the high demand of copper as a conductor, the price tag associated with it is between 3-4 times the prices of aluminum. Hence, swift transformation to copper clad aluminum wires from pure copper wire enables the cable manufacturers to exploit the benefits of copper while also monitoring the price associated with it. Alongside, the steel copper clad wires are also noted to have minimal scrap value, discouraging theft in certain areas.
However, the main problem with copper clad wires isn’t economical but technical. For starters, it is found that copper clad aluminum has 55% higher DC (direct current) resistance. This results in energy transferred to be converted into heat, reducing the overall amount of power transferred. However, these are anticipated to be minimized with further R&D investments over the forecast period.
The wide acceptance of the product in the electrical industry in recent times, has attracted the interest of several wire and cable manufacturers. Also, since the market ecosystem of copper clad wires is still in its evolutionary phase, the market entry for new manufacturers is expected to face relatively lesser competition.

On a regional front, the copper clad wire market is expected to be highly dominant in the countries of East Asia owing to the large scale consumer electronics production in the region. Additionally, with several companies adopting the “China Plus One” strategy, establishment of businesses in South Asia is seen to be on a higher side. This is further expected to boost the copper clad wire product sales in the countries of South Asia. Hence, the region is expected to showcase relatively higher growth over the forecast period. With a steady economical evolution in countries in North America and Europe, the market for copper clad wire is expected to expand in tandem with the industrial growth. Large scale construction projects being lined up in Middle East & Africa have placed the region at a position where copper clad wire can potentially create lucrative opportunities for market participants over the long term.
