Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) is an organic compound originating from dimethylaminopropylamine and coconut oil. CAPB serves as an amphoteric surfactant which exhibits a particular behavior of zwitterionic, having both cationic and anionic structures in one molecule. CAPB is manufactured in a two-step batch process.
Fatty acids hydrolyzed from coconut oil are reacted with dimethylaminopropylamine in an aqueous solution to give amidoamine, which is then reacted with sodium mono chloroacetate in alkaline conditions to give CAPB. It consists of a carboxylate and a quaternary ammonium cation, available as a pale yellow solution and is widely used as surfactants and cosmetics.
CAPB is considered one of most important secondary surfactants since its introduction in the personal care industry during the 1960s and has become an essential component in surface-active formulas. The concentration of CAPB in personal care and cleaning products usually ranges up to 30% active matter. It shares a significant market share in cosmetic and toiletries owing to water-holding and moisturizing properties
The global demand for CAPB has been witnessing a noticeable growth on account of increasing demand from its end-user industries and is anticipated to rise on account of growing awareness regarding the importance of CAPB as multi-functional usages such as surfactants and cosmetics.
The usage of CAPB in personal care industry has significantly grown over the past few years owing to its relative mildness compared with other surface active compounds. CAPB is widely consumed as a cosmetic ingredient in Western Europe such as detergents, shampoos, and hand washing agents.
Emerging markets in Asia Pacific with increasing demand for personal care products on account of changing lifestyles and rising disposable incomes of the individuals are expected to generate potential opportunities for the growth of the CAPB market. The market for CAPB has been gaining significant importance on account of its rising prevalence in the personal care industry.
A significant amount of foaming and detergent surfactants are available in the market. However, only some of these products are considered vital based on their raw materials that hold strong market potential in the future, such as lauryl ether sulfates and lauryl sulfates.
A series of secondary surfactants has been manufactured for use with these cost-effective and efficient primary surfactants. Secondary surfactants such as CAPB are being increasingly developed by manufacturers to enhance the properties of the primary surfactants as well as optimizing product performance.
Large scale players such as are significantly investing in the development of new products for the purpose of maintaining a competitive edge in the CAPB market. Key manufacturers have entered into several collaborations and agreements with other companies for the marketing of new products as well as garnering a larger share in the market.
The increasing application of CAPB in the personal care industry is expected to be one of the major growth factors for the market. CAPB is used in an extensive range of personal care applications such foam booster in shampoos, surfactants in bath products, thickener and emulsifying agent in cosmetics, and antistatic agent in hair conditioners. However, rising health concerns regarding the allergic use of CAPB is expected to slow down the growth of the market.
BASF SE, Clariant, EOC Surfactants, Evonik, Guangzhou DX, Guangzhou Tinci, Inolex Chemical, Jintan Organic, Lubrizol Corporation, Shanghai Mail, Shanghai OLI, Solvay, and Stepan are some of the key manufacturers of CAPB present in the industry.
